Jason Cooper King - Jason Cooper King is a local artist who also captures the Jazz Age with convincing visual narration. His unique illustration like styling and deceptively simple compositions combine to produce a very real and universally shared memory of rural life in the American 20’s. Jason executes portraiture in acrylics that create a universal sense of nostalgia by working from old photographs and slides of rural America from the first half of the twentieth century. |

Art education ~ studied at:
Artist’s Statement I strongly prefer to work with abstract designs as I can best establish a desired visual effect that also conveys appropriate feelings. Detaching the viewer’s eye from reality often provides an opportunity to experience the visual experience on a more emotional level. A finished piece is not successful unless both objectives are achieved. People interpret a work of abstract art very differently but it is important to the artist to feel personally attached and satisfied with the result. It is for this reason that I usually do not title the piece as it should be a personal decision of the proud owner. I like working with stone as a medium because it is inherently three-dimensional. Three-dimensional design is more complex and challenging to deal with as all surfaces need to integrate with each other. The eye must travel around the stone in order to produce the energy and movement required for a successful design. I very often ‘open up’ the stone by carving within and through it, thereby further enhancing and integrating the three dimensional design with both negative and positive spaces. |

Melissa
Tiffany - “Waste
not, want not” guides Melissa in rescuing dated print material from the
trash, using them as a medium for her collages. Through collage, Melissa narrates
stories about the characters she’s met while on her many adventures; and
sometimes they speak for her own alter egos. She has sat in several drawing classes
and studios, studied at Milwaukee Area Technical College and Syracuse University.
Her goal is to one day earn her BFA, but until then, as Kinga Freespirit so often
said, “It’s not about the destination, it’s the journey that
matters.” Melissa works in 2-D and 3-D forms.

Mick
Mather - Mick
Mather is a printmaker, editor & publisher and a former teaching
artist. He exhibits his block-relief, monotype & digital prints locally,
regionally and internationally. During the 1990’s he began using the computer
as a tool to deconstruct digital images and rearrange them, creating a digital
collage. Later, these works became the foundation for further digital enhancement
including repainting, filter manipulation and layering so that the end result
looked like an impressionist painting. Currently, Mick is represented by The
Lucas Gallery at 33 Jordan Street in Skaneateles, New York.
Mick also works in arts management as the Special Projects Coordinator for the Cultural Resources Council of Syracuse & Onondaga County. He is the CRC liaison for the Visual Arts Showcase exhibition series held in partnership with WCNY-TV; he provides technical assistance for various State, County and other Grants; coordinates Community Outreach services such as the CRC Individual Artist and Organizational Workshop Series; and initiated The Totem Project through TNT Sector 1 where local artists sculpture will be sleeved over old parking meter posts in Downtown Syracuse. Other Community & Volunteer Service includes positions as President of the Board of Directors of Syracuse Allied Arts, Inc. where for 10 years he coordinated the “Annual ART MART Show & Sale” (open to Art Guild members and other artists working in various media and on all levels of achievement); Executive Board of CNY Edge; Curatorial Board of New York State Treasures; a consulting member of the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force; Onondaga Citizens League Committee Member in 2006; and nominated by Sen. John A. DeFrancisco to the Thursday Morning Round Table in 2006. |

Richard Merkin - Richard Merkin’s work conjures up scenes that evoke the raucous spirit of the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. In his witty, often eccentric illustrations, Merkin depicts movie stars, jazz musicians, sports heroes and literary impresarios co-mingling with more personal references. In his highly stylized approach, Merkin privileges color relationships, balance and juxtaposition over strictly literal descriptions of his subjects. And humor; there’s always humor. |
